About the role
As Director, Software Engineering you will build and lead the engineering teams behind Neo's products, own their architecture and delivery, and work directly with Bhavin on multiple zero-to-one builds.
We are proponents of leveraging best-in-breed AI tools at every step of the engineering lifecycle — design, development, review, and testing. This requires a different engineering mindset: a lean team of senior, hands-on, AI-adept engineers, resulting in ultra-rapid iteration cycles and fast output. You will own, oversee, and set the bar for this approach across your teams, from design through to production. You'll run this with a small group of senior contributors rather than a large one, and you're expected to stay hands-on enough to make architecture calls and read the code your teams and their agents produce.
Responsibilities
Team & leadership
Build and lead cross-functional teams — frontend, backend, data, ML, BI, QA, SRE, and program management — for multiple products.
Hire, coach, and grow senior ICs and engineering leaders; set the bar for who joins.
Technical direction & architecture
Own the architecture of scalable, cloud-native, multi-tenant platforms across the suite — service boundaries, data models, and how systems hold up as load grows.
Make the cross-cutting reliability, performance, and security calls that no single team owns.
Execution & the AI-first SDLC
Drive 0 to 1 delivery end to end — from architectural design to launch and scaling.
Run the agentic loop at team scale: spec, agents implement in parallel, steer, verify. Own verification as the real bottleneck.
Build and improve the harness your teams build with — specs, reusable skills, evals, guardrails, and the quality gates agent-authored change must pass.
Product & outcomes
Partner with Product and Design to pin down the right problem, scope feasibility, and push back when the cost isn't worth the outcome.
Own product outcomes and customer impact, not tickets.
Operate & scale
Keep delivery fast and safe through CI/CD, containerised deployment, and infrastructure as code, without trading away quality or security.
Skills
AI-native engineering practice — Fluent in an agentic workflow: spec-driven delivery, steering coding agents, and building the harness (specs, skills, evals, guardrails) that makes agent output reliable at the team level. Hands-on with tools like Copilot, Cursor, or Windsurf.
Engineering leadership — Proven at building lean teams of senior, AI-adept engineers and running rapid iteration cycles over long release trains; able to hire, coach, and grow both ICs and leaders.
Full-stack technical depth — Hands-on across a modern stack: backend in Java or Node.js, PostgreSQL (AWS RDS) and MongoDB, Kafka for messaging, and frontends in React, React Native, and Flutter.
Architecture & scale — Strong judgment on cloud-native, multi-tenant systems — the trade-offs, failure modes, and operational realities that only appear in production.
Cloud & delivery engineering — AWS, CI/CD pipelines, containerisation (Docker), and infrastructure as code (Terraform/CDK)
0 to 1 execution — A track record of shipping new products in a startup or scale-up, with a bias to ruthlessly prioritise, move fast, and iterate on feedback and data.
Experience & Qualifications
15+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 4 years leading multi-disciplinary teams.
Production depth across a modern stack — e.g. Java or Node/TypeScript, SQL (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB), Kafka, and React/React Native/Flutter — on AWS.
B.Tech/M.Tech in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
